SUGAR COATED MERCURY - ‘delusion body parts are made of sweets’
Everything we know about Mercury, either homoeopathically or elemental general ancient, as well as modern life uses, is highlighted namely by its toxicity. Much of this toxicity in ancient times went misunderstood as it was used time and again for imagined health and beauty benefits. Sadly, our knowledge of this toxicity in modern times has not reduced its use.

But it is interesting how we can follow through this theme of mercury and sugar to our understanding of the homeopathic symptom picture of mercury.
The stomach is disordered after sweets; one has eructations after sweets; eructations can be sour after sweets; there is heartburn after eating sweets; the stomach and abdomen suffer generally after eating sweets; eating sweets can cause diarrhoea; sweets can aggravate any condition; and there is a general desire for and aversion to eating sweets.
Continuing along this line we also have:-
salivation is sweet
the mouth has a sweetish odour
taste in the mouth is sweetish
food and bread tastes sweet
nausea comes with a sweet tinge
expectoration is sweetish
perspiration has a sweetish odour
all discharges have a sweetish odour
Mercury (the remedy) also has a huge affinity to diabetes (a blood sugar disorder)
So it is hardly surprising to find that a curious symptom belonging to Mercury is that of ‘having a delusion that body parts are made of sweets’ - first recorded by Allen in the Encyclopaedia of Pure Material Medica, 1874.
This kind of begs the question why? Apart from the fact that curious symptoms always arise during provings of any and every remedy, it is sometimes good to get a grip on understanding why these symptoms occur.
Sugar and sweetness are not reliable as nutritional values, quite the reverse. Necrosis, destruction, corrosion, ulcerations, inflammation, lividity, decomposition, cellular tissue oedema and other malignancies are well associated with overuse. These belong not only to Mercury but also the syphilitic miasm and of course we are well familiar with the pathology belonging to this most destructive state even though there is so much sweetness associated with one remedy that is iconic of that miasm.
