LEVITATION
Levitation is a reality, a physical possibility, and the topic can incite lively discussion.
Levitation is also a mental, emotional and virtual reality and we can elevate ourselves according to what drives the energy towards the result.
Levitation (from the latin levitas = “lightness") is the process by which an object is held aloft, without mechanical support, in a stable position.
‘Levitation is accomplished by providing an upward force that counteracts the pull of gravity (in relation to gravity on earth), plus a smaller stabilizing force that pushes the object toward a home position whenever it is a small distance away from that home position. The force can be a fundamental force such as magnetic or electrostatic, or it can be a reactive force such as optical, buoyant, aerodynamic, or hydrodynamic. Levitation excludes floating at the surface of a liquid because the liquid provides direct mechanical support. Levitation excludes hovering flight by insects, hummingbirds, helicopters, rockets, and balloons because the object provides its own counter-gravity force’.
However the difference here is that we are treating a diseased state and in that context the act of levitation becomes a delusion and subsequently the repertories use the description ‘delusion, floating in the air’ (why this has to be changed I don’t really know as many of the materia medicas describe it as ‘levitation’).
Delusions are real to those who experience them and if we look at just a few remedies in the rubric (there are quite a lot - and each remedy will be there due to its own special reasons) , we might get some insights into this very interesting phenomena.
STICTA PULMONARIA
Sticta is a nervous remedy dominated by respiratory and rheumatic symptoms. The nervous disposition creates a need for loquacity, restlessness to the point of hysterical expression. Concentration is almost impossible so they become dull, always feeling unwell, often take to their bed and talking is a way of breaking the circle.
Lying down in bed with numerous complaints is always going to make them feel worse though and it is often then when the feeling of limitation occurs, not just the whole body but single parts feels feel as if floating. The legs, hands and feet are restless enough to create this delusion of levitation.
So although dull and heavy (which dominates throughout the symptom picture) the levitation is also a way of breaking the circle, breaking the lassitude.
Being a rheumatic remedy I suspect that the anxiety felt around the heart region suggests a drop in blood pressure which could contribute to the feeling of floating. Overall the sensation of levitation comes from an overall blocked feeling such as with bronchitis, tracheitis, catarrh, swollen glands, the nose feels full there are hard masses in the lungs - they need air and levitating upwards in the attempt to get that air is essential.
OZONE (oxygen)
This remedy is also about liberating the body with air. This leads to bursting sensations which resemble a need to escape, not least in the form of flatulence. They have suffocating episodes felt especially in the chest. As part of the liberation this remedy sets up a power of discharge and has been used in cases of cancer where ulcerating tumours have discharged so much they have been reduced in size.
The levitation takes the form of feeling light, floating in the air, feels as if flying. They feel as if they are a great person high above looking down. This emanates from a deep feeling of being unloved and unappreciated so rising above it also becomes the liberation.
Without air there can be no levitation.
TELLURIUM
This is a remedy you cannot get near to, cannot touch. Sometimes they smell bad and so you don’t want to get too close.
The levitation here is also a form of escape - there can be an expulsion of worms, eruptive escapes of noxious internal discharges. There can be hyperaethesia and a sudden rush of blood.
They oscillate between being restless and nervous to a tranquil state. It is a remedy you might link to Sulphur but generally much worse. They tend to have an offensive appearance and ditto with the personality.
Sometimes the levitation can be linked to a fall with head injury, basically a concussion. There is a lot going on inside the brain such as a feeling of being beaten, migraines can be experienced and a feeling as if air was rushing through.
Lying down and trying to go to sleep is most likely when the feeling of levitation occurs.
This is a small sample of remedies that have this strange feeling or need for levitation. There are so many others and as always worth reading several to make further comparisons.
Generally levitation is a need for escape, to float more happily, to rise above and also an be act of defiance.
