Virtually any remedy can have a cough symptom picture. Individualising that symptom picture is what will lead you to the right remedy – the remedy that will cure.
It is important to have an understanding of any diseased state which might be underlying the cough – such as asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, croup, whooping cough, emphysema, pleurisy, lung cancer, coughs of a nervous origin, etc. These are just disease state names and we don’t prescribe on those but we have to know the route of the pathology.
Coughs can present as acute states as well as playing a part of a chronic state. Only taking the full and detailed case will you know.
Here is a small selection of remedies that have an affinity to respiratory distress.
ACONITE
The cough is whistling, short, forcible, choking, hollow, hoarse, spasmodic, rough, croaking, loud, barking, croupy. The onset is sudden. Constant short dry cough with feeling of suffocation, cough wakes from sleep.
There is a sensation of dryness in the whole chest, no expectoration, burning, pricking in larynx, scratching in throat, stitches in chest, constriction.
Aggravations = change of temperature, night, dry cold air, wine, lying on back or side, after eating or drinking, sleep, tobacco, fright, becoming overheated, inspiration, upright position, speaking.
Ameliorations = open air, rest, warm sweat.
When ill they become anxious, restless, fearful of death.
BELLADONNA
The cough is spasmodic, paroxysmal, rough, hollow, hacking, barking, short, tickling, dry, violent, whooping. Cough can end with a sneeze. It takes a lot of effort to raise any mucous. It can make the person hoarse. The cough can be so violent it makes the whole head feel as if it would burst. The larynx feels as if burning, tearing and tickling with a sense of constriction. The face becomes red, hot and burning and the expression takes on a ‘wild’ look.
Aggravations = night, talking, heat, drafts, awaking from sleep, dust, during sleep, 3pm, 11pm, company, motion.
Ameliorations = light covering, resting in bed, leaning against something.
BRYONIA
The cough is hard, painful, spasmodic, and dry with soreness of chest. There is a tickling in the larynx. Stitches in chest, holds onto sternum to try to keep chest still. Cough shakes whole body. Wants to breathe deeply but it hurts. Sensation of crawling upwards in throat followed by expectoration of mucous which can be jelly like and yellow, or rusty and blood streaked.
Coughing causes a headache. Must sit up to cough. Usually very thirsty with the cough.
Aggravations = motion of any kind, dryness, cold, heat, after drinking and eating, entering a warm room, inspiration, touch.
Ameliorations = pressing chest while coughing, resting, lying on painful side, cold things, cool and open air, drawing knees up.
The person needing Bryonia will always be irritable and wants to be left alone, quietly.
PHOSPHORUS
The cough is dry, hard, tight, tickling, which racks the person and is very exhausting. It is frequent, irritable, laryngeal and tracheal. There is a sensation of scratching in the throat. Violent pains in the chest causing cough and obliged to hold chest with the hands. Oppressive constriction in the chest. Coughing can cause an involuntary stool. Expectoration bloody, purulent, yellow, sour, salty, sweetish, frothy, rust coloured, white.
Aggravations = change of weather or temperatures, wind, cold, thunderstorms, getting wet, lying on the left or painful side, talking, light, salt. Expectoration is < morning and cough is < in evening.
Ameliorations = cold, open air, cold food, sleep, massage and rubbing, lying on right side.
The nature of the person is that of being nervous, anxious and suspicious, needs company and will be chilly with thirst for cold drinks and ice cold water.
CAUSTICUM
The cough is hard, hollow, dry, ticking, incessant. Cannot cough deep enough to raise expectoration even though chest seems full of mucous. There is a greasy taste when it is raised. Coughs until exhausted. There are feelings of dryness, rawness and hoarseness. Often looses urine when coughs.
Aggravations = dry and cold air, winds, drafts, 3-4 am and 6-8 pm, exertion, dark, sour things.
Ameliorations = cold drinks, damp weather, warmth of bed, gentle motion.
Their nature is that of being over sympathetic but also anxious, sad and whining, conscious stricken.
SPONGIA
The cough is hacking, dry, violent, crowing, barking, croupy, whooping, suffocative, wheezing. Sounds as though breathing through a sponge, sounds like a wood saw being used. Wakes from sleep with suffocation, violent cough with great alarm and anxiety. Air passages are dry but there can be profuse expectoration. Larynx is sensitive.
Aggravations = exertion, before midnight, touch, pressure, sweets, talking, singing, lying on the right side, after sleep, dry and cold wind.
Ameliorations = lying with head low, eating and drinking.
They are usually very timid and fearful when ill especially with the feeling of suffocation during the coughing.
STANNUM
The cough is forcible in an attempt to expel mucous, also violent, hoarse, dry, loose (mucous in the trachea), sputum is green and sweet, sometimes salty.
Lungs are weak, chest feels weak, feels empty, not much breath and has to loosen clothes to be able to breathe properly.
Aggravations = evening until midnight, sometimes noon to midnight, 10 am, laughing, singing, talking, cold, warm drinks, lying right side, touch.
Ameliorations = walking (but this weakens), open air, lying on something hard, bending double, expectoration.
The nature is that of being sad and sensitive, anxious and nervous, generally cut themselves off from people.
RUMEX
The cough is hoarse, barking, comes in attacks, teasing, persistent, incessant, fatiguing, paroxysmal, suffocative, dry but with copious mucous in trachea.
Cough on changing rooms from breathing cold air. Covers mouth up, as < warm to cold. Tough, stringy and tenacious mucous. Thick tough mucous in larynx with constant desire to hawk with no relief. Hoarse. Early stages of whooping cough. Dry at first, in paroxysms preceded by tickling in throat pit. Most violent paroxysms were few minutes after lying down at night after which he slept.
Aggravations = every night at 11 pm and at 2 and 5 am, evening after lying down, touching or pressing throat pit, from slightest inhalation of cool air, (covers head with bedclothes to make air warmer), going from warm to cold and vice versa.
Ameliorations = covering mouth, wrapping up.
IPECACUANHA
The cough is spasmodic, incessant, whooping, asthmatic, suffocative, (child becomes blue and stiff). Respiration is wheezing or rattling but cannot expectorate. Violent dyspnoea with wheezing and great weight and anxiety in chest. Loss of breath with cough. Intense nausea unrelieved by vomiting with a clean tongue. Gagging or retching with the cough.
Aggravations = overeating, heat and cold, periodically, motion, lying down, damp, winter.
Ameliorations = open air, rest, pressure, cold drinks.
Generally they are very irritable, capricious, children cry and scream a lot.
STICTA
The cough is incessant, whooping, barking, dry at night but loose in the morning, hacking, prevents sleep, air passages feel numb. Sensation of tickling high in the pharynx.
Common name is lung wort.
Aggravations = inspiration, when tired, towards evening, lying down, sudden change of temperature, touch, motion.
Amelioration = open air, pressure.
When ill they become loquacious and don’t care if anyone is listening or not.
ALLIUM CEPA
The cough is hacking, oppressive, violent (as if it will tear the larynx), hoarse. There is tickling in the throat and a constant inclination to hack to try and relieve it, causes the eyes to water.
Cough often accompanies Bronchitis and there is lots of sneezing. There is a feeling of constriction and oppression.
Aggravations = inhaling cold air, damp, spring, evening, rest, lying down, afternoon and evening, warm room.
Ameliorations = motion, open air, cold room.
Generally fearful when ill due to the intensity of the symptoms.
Feel free to add rx if tou wish.
