Yawning
I want to try an experiment.
I would like you to think about yawning or watch someone yawning and see if this makes you yawn. I reckon it will!
There are over 400 rubrics that pertain to yawning in some way or another. There are some unusual ones as well but these tend to involve more meaningful leading symptoms where yawning is just part of it.
Concentrating on the more ‘constant’ aspect helps to understand a few remedies where yawning plays an important role.
Yawning is explained as a reflex action and a simultaneous inhalation of air and a stretching of the ear drums followed by an exhalation of air.
Named causes = tiredness, boredom, hunger, too much carbon dioxide, to keep alert, nervousness and other stress factors, control of brain and body temperature, and other neurotransmitters being active.
It can also be due to a herd instinct to synchronise behaviour to be alert (this explains the ‘contagious’ aspect). Some preexisting neurological states such as autism or schizophrenia can prevent empathic yawning.
The science is out there to discover and research.
Plantago - well known for toothache and earache and straight away we have a direct line to yawning and the stretching of ears. There is a host of neuralgic symptoms.
It is a big nerve remedy without taking any credit away from other important sx.
There is a lot of mental agony, dull, confused, mentally prostrated, any mental activity creates rapid breathing, anxiety and yawning allays this. There is also a disposition to stretch the whole body especially the limbs.
It is an extremely sleepy remedy with expressive and continued yawning. But the sleep is poor due to gloomy dreams, grinding of the teeth, insomnia from abdominal sx such as belching (this is an exhalation of sorts), pains and distension.
It is also a very chilly remedy and yawning will encourage heat dispersion.
Tellurium - a very sensitive remedy with pains all over and they cannot be touched (might not want to with the numerous fungal features present). The pains are everywhere, discharges everywhere, smells everywhere, fearful, forgetful, depressive and incapable of mental activity.
The ears are a focus - discharging, smelly, eruptive. Ditto the eyes.
A curious sx is as if air whistled through the Eustachian tube.
Air is a strong theme:-
The lungs wheeze and need extra air
Air gets trapped in the bowels
Deep breathing hurts
>>> open air
A lot of yawning as an intake of air
Belching as an exhalation
Feels as if floating on air when going to sleep.
Tellurium is close to Sulphur, one of the big yawning remedies and is yet again a very drowsy remedy with much yawning. Yawning can often accompany retching.
Paraffine - not a well known remedy but it is a complex substance related to petroleum, sulphuric acid and naphthalene. Not easy to find a specific focus for this remedy but it is definitely a remedy that needs sleep and rest and a lot of support.
The ears feel as if twisted as do the teeth and mouth so this creates a constant yawning state and chronic sleepiness. They cannot keep awake and yet sometimes the sleep never comes because of the twisting pains (which can be felt anywhere not just ears and teeth).
There is also a sense of suffocation (can be emotional as well as physical) which also creates a need to yawn to let in more air.
We can look at more remedies if you wish.
So, ‘fess up. Did you yawn or not?
Thanks for reading. Joy Lucas
